DayZ

Into the Wilderness

What first caught my eye with DayZ was that you could take a nice quiet stroll and all of a sudden it’s a problem. You spend ten minutes exploring abandoned houses, find a fresh orange and some nice clothes, then you hear footsteps and forget what you’re after. That’s DayZ. Nothing feels guaranteed.

What DayZ Is Really About

DayZ is a survival game in a post-apocalyptic world. The game takes place in a deserted world filled with empty towns, forests, military bases, infected animals and people, and more. The goal is simple: survive. Easy to say, more difficult to do. You have nothing. You need to explore buildings, sheds, cars, and everywhere else looking for food, water, clothing, bandages, tools, and weapons. In addition, your character is subject to body conditions, hunger, thirst, temperature, injuries, and the value of sick.

You don’t get to stop world time while you figure out what you want to do. There are other survivors out there wandering about too – and you can never be sure if the stranger approaching you wants to work with you, trade with you, stay clear of a fight, or steal your stuff. That’s half of the charm.

How Survival Works

Preparation is key A normal game will start with a scavenging. You scavenge areas to find helpful items while being aware of your environment, and help can be found in all sorts of things. Even primitive gear will help. Food is sustenance. Clothing offers protection. Medical supplies can help when something goes wrong, and tools allow for crafting and other survival options. It’s not all about fighting.

You can hunt animals, fish, farm, build a base, fix vehicles, lay traps, cook food, and develop makeshift tools. All of those systems serve a purpose, and knowing how they work together makes it much easier to survive. Some region also offers more peril and more reward. Military positions, roaming foes, infected regions, and other locations will draw players searching for powerful gear. And that’s where things get dicey. Maybe you tried to make a good inventory for an hour, and then you come across another player, just crossing a road. Sometimes you work together. Sometimes you don’t.

Why the Survival Loop Works

DayZ doesn’t give you a pre-labeled to-do list. It’s up to you to set your priorities. Perhaps you’re running short on food. Perhaps your clothing has gotten soaked and you’re wasting away. Perhaps you located a vehicle but it’s just not going to run until you find that certain missing part. Or, maybe, you’ve got all the gear you need and you’re not sure if some nearby player is watching you.

I think the inventory system has a lot to do with this. Space is limited, so you can’t just pick everything up. You have to weigh what’s worth taking up a precious inventory slot, which makes things that would otherwise seem pretty mundane shockingly important. Food in a can. A cozy jacket. A knife. And once you’ve been at it a while, you won’t even have to think about it.

Common Use Cases

  • Participating in open-world scavenging and exploration survival with other players.
  • Joining multiplayer servers for spontaneous meets with other survivors
  • Building and maintaining a personal base
  • Hunting animals for food and resources
  • Fishing as an alternative source of food
  • Growing crops and creating a more sustainable food system
  • Searching military areas for higher-value equipment
  • Exploring contaminated zones with suitable protective gear
  • Fixing vehicles and driving vehicles around the map
  • Taking part in events such as convoy or crash sites
  • Learning how to use different weapons and doing drills for combat
  • Playing cautiously while avoiding unnecessary encounters
  • Working with other players through voice communication
  • Travel far away just for the sake of discovering what’s out there

Final Thoughts From the Road

DayZ is one of those game where even tiny slips of judgement can have huge implications. Not packing enough supplies can be a problem, picking up the wrong type of weather can ruin your entire day and taking some bad advice from some random player can wipe out your run in an instant. But that’s also the reason why high points in the game feel so sweet. A hot find in a pile of ruined shacks, patching up a vehicle with one of the handful of spare bits you’ve managed to locate, or making it to that hilly island with a nearly full pack can all be a huge achievement because you made them happen.

It’s still a survival sandbox, then, and the last couple of updates have kept ramping up that sandbox by adding new gear, altered environments, weapons, events, and other bits and pieces related to the larger DayZ universe. And to be honest, that’s what makes it still worth playing for me. You never know what the next building, road, tree line or distant figure is going to be. Sometimes there’s nothing. That’s fine.
